    Solution: It appears there's a cache-like issue. Go into iOS Settings for each of the Office apps, and turn on the 'Reset' option. This clears offline files the next time you open and close each Office app. The Reset option also appears to turn itself off after the files have been cleared so you don't constantly clear offline files.

    I did this about six weeks ago and haven't had an issue yet.
